How to resolve cursor jumping to next cell after snipping

Why the cursor moves to the next cell when you snip to a cell that looks blank, and how to clear leftover snip data to fix it.

Sometimes when you snip to a cell that appears blank, the cursor jumps to the next cell over. This article explains why that happens and how to resolve it.

Why this happens

DataSnipper writes snip data to a cell when you make a snip. If a cell is cleared of its text or numbers, the snip data remains unless you use the Delete Snips button. With that cell highlighted, the next snip you make is placed one cell to the right. This is expected behaviour.

A snip placed one cell to the right of a cell that still contains snip data

In rare cases, when large amounts of snips are deleted, the snip data still remains in the cell and prevents snipping to that same cell. DataSnipper then snips to the next cell to the right that does not contain snip data.

How to resolve it

If the cursor is jumping to the next cell, first make sure the Delete Snips button has been used. You may need to use it on an individual cell to delete the snip data. If the cursor still jumps after that, you may need to remove the cells entirely using the right mouse button and the Delete option in Excel.

Removing cells in Excel using the right-click Delete option to clear leftover snip data

With the cells removed, the snip data no longer exists and cannot cause the cursor to jump to the next cell. If you still cannot snip to a specific cell after removing the cells, contact the DataSnipper support team.
